History of Landsdowne

Lansdowne is a city in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand whose history is culturally influenced from the British period to the time of Raj. Earlier this place was known as ‘Kalikund’ which means black hill in Garhwali. Later in the year 1857, it was renamed after the then Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne. During his rule the British rulers had established the Garhwal Rifle Cantonment of the Armed Forces at this location and shifted the first battalion from Almora to Lansdowne. Lansdowne was an untouched and quiet place, due to which it became a special place for soldiers to hide. Central Lansdowne in the city of Lansdowne is one of the oldest war museums that show historical influences here.

Tourist attraction of Lansdowne

St. Mary’s Church– St. Mary’s Church is the famous tourist destination of Lansdowne. In 1895, A. Hache B. Hume of the Royal Engineers built this church. In this museum, tourists will be able to see pictures of pre-independence era. Seeing the audio visual clip, the tourists will get to know the history of the regiment.

Love lane- Lovers Lane is the popular tourist destination of Lansdowne. Lovers Lane is considered to be the best trek route in the region. On one side of the trek, one will get a wonderful view of the overcast valley and the Himalayan ranges. So on the other hand, oak and cedar trees will appear.

Jungle safari– Jungle safari is very popular among the tourists visiting Lansdowne. Tourists are lost in the natural greenery of oak and deodar forests, and the flora and fauna of the various species found here make this trip even more interesting.

Durga devi Temple- The famous Durga Devi Temple, located 25 km from Lansdowne, is built within the cave. This temple built on the banks of river Khoh is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is believed that this temple is one of the oldest Siddha piths in the country.

Tip-in-Top– Situated very close to St. Mary’s Church, the tip-in-top is a favorite tourist spot here. This place, also known as Tiffin Top, offers a beautiful view of the snowy hills. From here, tourists will get a glimpse of Tibet.

Best time to visit in Lansdowne

Lansdowne is a place where there is good weather throughout the year. From October – March, there is a winter season in which the temperature falls to 0 ° C. The maximum temperature reaches 25 ° C during the summer season in April – June, which is very pleasant for travelling here. You can visit this place in the months of July-September i.e. monsoon. The Autumn Festival is also a good time to visit Lansdowne during autumn.
